What is ISO?
ISO stands for 'same' in Greek. It is an acronym for 'International Organization of Standards'. This is an international agency founded in 1946 in Geneva, Switzerland to promote the development of international standards and facilitate the exchange of goods and services worldwide. ISO 9000 is a series of documented standards prescribing quality assurance management. The series has been adopted by 80 countries, including the United States, Canada, the European Union and Japan.
In it's most basic form, the Standard requires that you:
-
Say what you do ~ have documented procedures for performing the work that affects product or service quality.
-
Do what you say ~ carry out the work in accordance with the written procedures.
-
Record what is done ~ retain records of activities, providing objective evidence of compliance to auditors.
-
Improve, based on results ~ compare what has actually happened to what was planned. Use this information to identify and correct shortcomings in the Quality System.
It is vital that top management actively supports the achievement of product and service quality. A quality must be written which defines the organization and structure of the staff responsible for product and service quality. It must provide for inspectors, independent auditors and reviewers. An ISO 9000 Management Representative is assigned with the authority to carry out the requirements of the Standard and personally review the results of the internal audits.
A Quality System is created and maintained by keeping a comprehensive set of controlled procedures documents using valid statistical techniques and having the resources needed to achieve quality. These documents will include results and authorizations, audits of the Quality System to keep it current, corrective and preventative actions and calibration and measurements of test equipment.
All phases of product development and manufacture are carried out with attention to service and quality. From reviewing the sales agreement with the customer; all stages of product selection and supplier control; identification, testing and control of creation; to handling, storing, packaging and delivery plus customer service.
